In the recent economy there are many people who have suffered credit difficulties. Everybody wants to have excellent credit but every now and then we all have unanticipated situations. Credit tribulations are bothersome for individuals because it can be difficult if not impossible to get credit, if you do manage to obtain credit you can be charged a higher interest rate or you may have to put down more collateral than customary.
However, you can take some actions to repair your credit. First off you will need to get a current credit report from all of the three credit reporting agencies. TransUnion, Equifax and Experian are the main three in the United States. You are entitled to one free report each year from each of them or you can pay a fee and get a combination report that contains all three.
After you get your credit report you will need to scrutinize it for errors and inaccuracies. There are likely some mistakes on your credit report because it is estimated that as many as 79% of all credit reports contain mistakes. You have the right to dispute anything that you deem might be inaccurate on your credit report.
Credit reporting agencies are merely paid to provide the information, whether it is accurate or not is immaterial to them. If the information is erroneous or mistaken on your credit report you are the only one who suffers because of it, consequently you must do what you can to make sure that your credit report is as accurate as possible.
The Fair Credit Reporting Act or the FCRA was enacted to protect consumers. It gives you the right to dispute anything that you discover on your report that you believe to be erroneous. You have to submit a formal written dispute and after receipt of your dispute the credit bureaus have 30 to 45 days to either confirm the accuracy of the information or remove it from your credit report.
Being a consumer you actually have a benefit when it comes to disputing credit listings. Since the credit agencies are only paid to supply information it is actually a loss to them when they have to verify a dispute. Therefore if you put forth a good case, you have a very favorable chance of getting the information removed.
While trying to repair your credit with disputes you should also try to rebuild some new good credit. Pay everything on time and if you can try to pay down the balances on your current debt. A significant portion of your credit score is based upon how much credit you have available compared to how much credit you have used. The highest scores belong to those who have access to credit but don’t actually use it.
You can rebuild and repair your credit, you just need to take some actions to get started. If your economic situation such as your current income and job are in order, then now is the time to do whatever it takes to repair your credit.
